Jacobus, PA Shower Install: Opening Up a Fiberglass Stall With Custom Acrylic and Frameless Glass

An enclosed fiberglass shower stall replaced with an open, custom acrylic shower and a custom frameless glass enclosure, completed in 3 working days.

The homeowners' original fiberglass shower stall was boxed in by a wall that made it feel small and dark. Atlas Construction Group removed the stall, took out the wall to open up the shower space, and installed a custom acrylic shower with a rain shower head and handheld combo, a built-in niche, and a custom frameless glass enclosure.

A Shower That Felt Closed In

This Jacobus home's bathroom had plenty of room, but the shower didn't feel like it. The original fiberglass stall sat behind a wall that cut it off from the rest of the bathroom, blocking light and making the shower feel narrow. The fiberglass itself had dulled with age and was hard to keep looking clean, and the original sliding shower door was inoperable.

The homeowners wanted a brighter, more open shower that matched the rest of the room, with better storage and a better showerhead. They asked Atlas Construction Group to replace the stall and rework the space around it.

The Challenge: Three Problems With the Original Shower

Swapping one stall for another wouldn't have solved the real problem. The layout around the shower needed to change too.

Problem 1: A wall that boxed the shower in

The shower was closed off by a wall that made the space feel cramped and kept natural light out. Opening up the shower meant taking that wall out, not just replacing the stall.

Problem 2: A dated fiberglass stall

The one-piece fiberglass unit showed its age and was hard to keep clean, and it didn't match the look of the rest of the bathroom.

Problem 3: No built-in storage and a basic showerhead

There was no built-in place for shampoo and soap, and only a standard fixed showerhead. The homeowners wanted a more comfortable, spa-style shower.

Why this matters: Removing a wall around an old stall is one of the most effective ways to make a shower feel bigger without adding square footage. See our Bathroom Remodeling services for more options.

Atlas's Approach: Custom Acrylic and Frameless Glass

Atlas removed the fiberglass stall and the wall around it, then built a custom acrylic shower in the opened-up space. A custom frameless glass enclosure replaced the wall, so light now passes straight into the shower.

Why custom acrylic with frameless glass was the right choice

  • A more open feel: clear frameless glass in place of a solid wall makes the shower and the bathroom feel larger.
  • Low maintenance: smooth, non-porous acrylic walls with no grout lines to scrub or reseal.
  • Custom fit: the acrylic shower and the glass were both made to the dimensions of the new opening.
  • Built-in storage: a recessed niche keeps bottles off the floor and out of the way.
  • Better showering: a rain shower head plus a handheld on an adjustable slide bar.

Fixtures & materials

The finished shower has marble-look acrylic wall panels in warm beige tones, a rain shower head and handheld combo on a slide bar with a soap basket, a recessed two-shelf niche, and a custom frameless glass enclosure with a hinged door. Part of the enclosure sits on a tiled half wall beside the soaking tub. Fixtures are in a brushed-nickel finish. The custom acrylic walls and base are from Rev Home Products.

The Execution: Stall and Wall Out, Open Shower In

The project followed this sequence:

1

In-home consultation & measurements

Atlas met with the homeowners, reviewed their goals, and confirmed the wall could come out before planning the new shower.

2

Removal

The original fiberglass shower stall was removed and hauled away.

3

Wall removal

The wall was taken out to open up the shower space, and the area was prepped and finished for the new shower.

4

Custom acrylic shower installation

The new base and acrylic wall panels were installed, along with the niche and the rain shower head / handheld combo.

5

Custom frameless glass enclosure

The glass was measured once the walls were in, then custom made and installed to fit.

6

Final walkthrough

The shower was cleaned and reviewed with the homeowners before sign-off.

Project Results: An Open, Bright Shower in 3 Days

The shower was completed on schedule, and the homeowners were able to use it as soon as the glass was installed.

A more open bathroom

With the wall gone and frameless glass in its place, the shower now feels like part of the room instead of closed off from it.

Easy to clean

Smooth acrylic walls wipe clean without grout to scrub, and the frameless glass has no tracks or frames to collect grime.

Built-in storage

The recessed niche gives shampoo and soap a permanent home, off the floor and out of the way.

A spa-style shower

The rain shower head and handheld combo make everyday showers more comfortable and make cleaning the shower easier.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a shower replacement like this take?
This Jacobus project, which included removing the stall and a wall, installing the custom acrylic shower and niche, and adding frameless glass, took 3 working days. Atlas gives you a timeline with your quote.
Can you remove a wall to make my shower bigger?
Often, yes. Whether a wall can come out depends on what's inside it, such as plumbing, wiring, or structural support. Atlas checks this during the in-home consultation before recommending it.
What's the difference between frameless and framed shower glass?
Frameless glass uses thicker panels held by minimal hardware instead of a metal frame. It looks cleaner, lets in more light, and has fewer tracks and edges to clean.
How much does a custom shower like this cost?
It depends on the size of the shower, the layout changes, and the glass. Our Bathroom Remodeling Cost Guide covers typical ranges, and every Atlas quote is free.
Do you serve Jacobus and York County?
